National Eating Disorders Awareness Week: The Role of Medical Equipment in Recovery
February 26, 2026
February 23-March 1 marks National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAW), with this year’s theme: Every Body Belongs. Eating disorders affect 30 million Americans across all ages, sizes, races, genders, and backgrounds. Unfortunately, eating disorders are often unseen or unsupported due to stigma, misinformation, and barriers to care.
As a medical scale manufacturer, we recognize that the tools healthcare providers use can either support recovery or inadvertently create additional stress for the patients. Weight measurement can be particularly challenging for individuals in eating disorder recovery.
Why Equipment Design Matters
The act of being weighed can be a scary and stressful action for patients in recovery. This being said, many healthcare facilities have adopted “blind weigh-ins” as a standard practice. This is where patients are weighed without seeing the actual number on the display. This approach is especially important for patients with eating disorders as it helps:
- Reduce anxiety during routine medical appointments
- Shifts focus from numbers to overall health
- Allows medical teams to track necessary health metrics while protecting their patients’ mental health
Equipment Designed With Recovery In Mind
Befour’s MX170 Portable Bariatric Scale features a detached display console that allows for recording weight measurements while keeping the display reading away from the patient. This simple design consideration makes a meaningful difference.
This design allows providers to:

- Position the display out of the patient’s line of sight
- Reduce patient distress during weigh-ins
- Create a more supportive treatment environment
- Provides easy portability and storage
Supporting “Every BODY Belongs”
This year’s NEDAW theme reminds us that although eating disorders don’t discriminate, neither does healthcare treatment. Medical equipment may seem like a small detail in the large landscape of eating disorders, but for patients in recovery, every interaction matters. As healthcare facilities choose equipment designed with patient dignity and mental health in mind, they are continuing to reinforce the message that every body truly belongs in spaces of healing and care.
